Federation Square

During the intensive 12 month concept and schematic design phase for Federation Square, the engineering, architecture and client teams worked together to consider numerous alternative and to produce a range of reports which resulted in a final scope for development of mechanical, electrical, fire services, hydraulics. communications, security and vertical transportation.

Briefs were developed for buildings and spaces, design option reports and detailed costing's prepared and subsequently options were then analysed for performance and suitability. The briefing and concept design raised several challenges that had to be met by the design team including:

  • Location and relocation
  • Addressing the environmental brief
  • The servicing of an architecturally unique space and site in a manner that did not compromise the architectural philosophy

These challenges were met in the design process with a result that was a well defined scope for documentation of services.

Particularly innovative aspects of the services design include:

  • A services reticulation strategy around the site that avoided the need for a separate services level.
  • A number of unique environmental initiatives.
  • A unique solution to the conditioning of art gallery spaces.
  • Full fire engineering to provide for open, interconnected public spaces.
  • Comprehensive multi media integration.
  • Specialised lighting and security systems.
